Learn about gambling in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Does St Thomas Have Casinos

The U.S. Virgin Islands is not a gaming haven like other islands in the region. The gambling here is extremely limited and there is only one casino on the islands. Gambling was previously outlawed until 1994. A referendum that called for the legalization of casino gambling was held in the U.S. Virgin Islands in November of 2013. In order for this referendum to pass, a majority of voters would have to participate. The referendum was rejected by a small margin, however it would eventually be approved in a referendum in 1994.

With the legalization of casino gambling in the U.S. Virgin Islands, one casino was built in St. Croix called the Divi Carina Bay Hotel & Casino. This is the only casino on the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, there are also lotteries available on the U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. Virgin Islands is the only place where a United States lottery is held outside of Puerto Rico and the mainland U.S.

The U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the Multi-State Lottery Association also known as MUSL. These islands host the smallest of the U.S. lotteries to offer scratch card games, Mega Millions and Powerball. The U.S Virgin Islands lottery is also part of the Caribbean Lottery. In this lottery, other islands in the Caribbean region participate in the lottery including Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Sint Maarten. In order to play the lottery or at the Divi Carina Bay Hotel & Casino, players must be at least 18 years of age. The headquarters for the lottery in the U.S. Virgin Islands is located on the island of St. Thomas in the city of Charlotte Amalie.
